What is mass storage?

Does your company require a high level of space optimization for low stock turnover? Bulk storage allows you to meet your operators’ needs without compromising customer satisfaction. Implementing vertical storage does not require any racking equipment, as there is no need to place pallets in racks. It can optimize up to 90% of your available store space, but this method only applies to loads with low handling frequency.

Defining mass storage

Bulk storage involves stacking goods on the warehouse floor. Far from being just simple accumulation, this logistics method promotes fast warehousing. It also prepares for the order shipping stage.

Bulk storage: what is it?

To implement this type of storage in your logistics warehouse, make sure to protect goods requiring special care. Then place the selected load units on top of one another (bins, pallets, products).

Only choose load units strong enough to bear the weight of others. We do not recommend this method for storing fragile items. Outsource incompatible stock warehousing to a professional like STTI. Our service adapts to your business needs to handle logistics outsourcing, stock management, organization, and order dispatching.

Bulk storage vs accumulation storage

Unlike bulk systems, accumulation storage uses pallet racks to support your goods. These pallet racks include safety features to protect your goods and staff. Both storage solutions remove warehouse aisles to optimize available space.

What's the point of a mass storage system?

The real added value of vertical storage lies in the low initial investment. To ensure the safety of stored products and the physical integrity of on-site workers, using racking is recommended.

Advantages of bulk storage

This logistics solution reduces costs associated with rack purchases. Beyond being the most economical storage method, it maximizes available space in your facility. It eliminates unnecessary aisles and frees up entire areas to increase your storage capacity or create a larger packing zone.

Bulk storage involves stacking compact groups with same-reference goods. It simplifies asset labeling and improves stock control.

When combined with logistics software, you can easily map your inventory and identify the real-time location of any product. You’ll avoid stockouts and their associated issues.

Limits of bulk storage

Every warehouse has a height limit restricting stacking. Stacking many goods without racking can weaken the structure and increase collapse risk.

Bulk storage relies on the strength of load units. Heavy stacked packages may damage goods at the bottom. This method also increases accident risk for workers. You must build stable stacks and ensure all operators wear PPE.

What are the requirements for this logistics solution?

Bulk storage is particularly suited to companies storing uniform load blocks. We recommend this method to store construction materials and cylindrical items (metal drums, tires…). Floor storage and stacking are also ideal for humanitarian operations near distribution points.

Make sure cargo is stacked uniformly. Warehouse managers applying this method:

    • Identify pallet configurations;
    • Provide interlayer systems for stacking;
    • Stabilize the base layer;
    • Only stack units from the same shipment together;
    • Ensure no box, bag, or bale rests on the edge of the supporting pallet.

You can also use the bulk storage method for temporary warehousing.
